Condition Guide
How we grade the condition of every used book on the shelf.
New / Unread new
In perfect condition, cover and pages flawless. We describe very few books as this.
Mint / Like New like-new
You could hardly tell this book is second-hand — almost as new and possibly unread. The spine is not creased, and there are no bumped corners or markings except possibly a price sticker. Hardbacks usually have their dust jackets, with no tears, spine damage or fading to the cover.
Very Good very-good
Minimal signs of previous ownership — read but carefully handled. There may be slight wear such as a small spine crease and minor shelf wear to the edges, and on older books some page fading, but no major damage such as tears. The only marking would be an owner’s name or a dedication in the front.
Good good
An average used book — complete and fully readable, but showing noticeable wear. This might include a creased (but not broken) spine, some fading and bumped edges, and there may be minor highlighting or inscriptions.
Fair / Acceptable acceptable
Readable but showing significant wear, ageing or damage. Pages and text are complete, but features such as endpapers or the dust jacket may be missing. Bindings may be loose and some pages slightly torn or faded.
Poor poor
Worse than fair. We only sell rarer books — usually by popular authors, or older books (nineteenth century and earlier) — in this condition. If you are unsure about purchasing, please call the shop for more details.
